He saved your ass. ![]() Your bully of a bouncer made it into a big thing and now he feels terrible.” “What if I am? Maybe I’m looking out for you. She was angry, which told me she was as frustrated as I was. “Are you seriously reading my text? You know that’s an invasion of privacy,” she said. She was probably saving herself for something or someone special.īut I guarantee if I spent one night with her, I’d want to tattoo More Jade across my body.Īfter I rocked her fucking world, of course. There were girls who took that shit seriously, and many who didn’t. Something about her goodness screamed virgin, which was not something I ever wanted to mess around with. ![]() Speaking of sex–wouldn’t mind having some with my captor. She was sunshine and rainbows and I was booze and sex. ![]() Like a psychological phenomenon, I’d developed positive feelings for my captor. She’d sucked me into her nerdy little world, and now I wanted more. Maybe this was a form of Stockholm syndrome. ![]()

![]() The south forged a society that created incentives, rewarded innovation, and allowed everyone to participate in economic opportunities. Korea, to take just one of their fascinating examples, is a remarkably homogeneous nation, yet the people of North Korea are among the poorest on earth while their brothers and sisters in South Korea are among the richest. Otherwise, how to explain why Botswana has become one of the fastest growing countries in the world, while other African nations, such as Zimbabwe, the Congo, and Sierra Leone, are mired in poverty and violence?ĭaron Acemoglu and James Robinson conclusively show that it is man-made political and economic institutions that underlie economic success (or lack of it). None of these factors is either definitive or destiny. ![]() Is it culture, the weather, geography? Perhaps ignorance of what the right policies are? ![]() 6/12/2023 0 Comments Lise Meitner by Ruth Lewin Sime![]() ![]() ![]() There can be no doubt about it, Lise Meitner loved physics! Despite being born into a system where women were routinely denied an education beyond the age of 14, she managed, through periods of self-study and years of "volunteer" laboratory work, to become an acclaimed physicist and co-discoverer of atomic fission. Against All Odds: The Triumphs and Defeats of Lise Meitner Lise Meitner: A Life in Physics, by Ruth Lewin Sime, University of California Press, Berkeley, 1996. For example, in a current textbook covering nuclear energy, Meitner receives credit along with her collaborators for the discovery of atomic fission. * The reviewer notes she found no evidence for this. Students at the graduate level and beyond would constitute a prime readership for this biography the politics laid bare might disillusion more introductory students. Hubisz, Department of Physics, Box 8202, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC 27695-8202 zero for discussions of science and society, for it not only provides a classic example of the "glass ceiling" effect, but also exposes how fundamental research driven purely by fascination with science cannot be exempt from moral implications. ![]() Lise Meitner: A Life in Physics, by Ruth Lewin Sime Lise Meitner: A Life in Physics, by Ruth Lewin SimeĬolumn Editor: John L. ![]() 6/12/2023 0 Comments For Good by Karelia Stetz-Waters![]() Almost thirty years after Oranges, she was still writing about what a cold woman her mother was. I wanted to think that Winterson, my hero, my role model, had come farther in her emotional life. Moreover, the second half of Why Be Happy is about how Winterson’s unhappy childhood continued to haunt and hurt her in adulthood. ![]() I did not want Winterson to set the record straight and tell us, as she does, that her life sucked a little bit more than it did in Oranges. I read it when I was sixteen, the year I came out. In the real world, I just call that a memoir with embellishments.Įither way, I loved Oranges. ![]() In graduate school, I would have jumped on the postmodern implications of this statement. It is a novel about a girl named Jeanette who has a childhood very, very similar to Winterson’s. To be fair, Winterson explains in Why Be Happy that Oranges is not a memoir. ![]() Why Be Happy also promised to set the record straight about what was and was not true in Oranges. It’s just that Jeanette Winterson’s Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal promised to cover approximately the same time period as her first memoir, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. That’s not my usual reaction to book releases. I was somewhat disappointed to learn that my all-time favorite lesbian writer had released a new memoir. ![]() 6/12/2023 0 Comments A lucky man short story![]() ![]() His nickname Iron Horse really is fitting because he was so strong and resilient to every ail and ache in order to keep playing. He not only played baseball, but also attended college. His mother really was passionate about his schooling, just as much as he was passionate about baseball. ![]() Like so many people at the time, his family had immigrated to New York in order to find a better life. I find it fitting that the same year he was born was also the inaugural year of the World Series. I like that the beginning of the book sets up a little background of what is going on in the world when Lou is born. He was inducted to the Hall of Fame and was a part of one of the best Yankee teams of all time. He accomplished a great deal in his short thirty-seven years. I am amazed at his tenacity and strength as a person and a ball player. He never missed a day of school or a baseball game, playing in 2,130 consecutive games. He played the same time as Babe Ruth, one of the most well-known players of all time, but it was Gehrig who received the MVP awards. Response: I have heard of Lou Gehrig's Disease, and that it was named for a famous baseball player who contracted it however, I never realized the great impact Lou Gehrig had on the world. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments You are a champion marcus rashford![]() 'Perfect way to get your kids reading - get them a book by their hero!' The story has become more fun and besides that the events of Volume 2 have made Volume 1 more interesting in retrospect. As far as I know, the story of Halo Jones was never truly finished, so I hope it won’t leave me hanging too much by the end of it.Īlright, here we go. ![]() Halo Jones - so far - is certainly more about the journey than the destination. Especially considering how it was originally published in bite-sized portions in 2000AD, I was expecting more of a linear and fast moving plot. I suspect that I am not alone in initially feeling surprised by the direction of Halo Jones. and since this seems to be one of the last major comic works by Moore that I’ll ever have the pleasure of enjoying fresh I decided to write down my reactions after each volume in order to, I guess, savor the experience a bit. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments Stephen king through the keyhole![]() ![]() Any abusive, trolling, derogatory or threatening comments are strictly prohibited.
